When measuring coating thickness, it is easy to focus on the coating itself.
But in many industrial applications, the substrate can be just as important.
A coating thickness gauge does not simply “see” the coating thickness. The measurement principle is also affected by the material underneath it.
For example:
• F-type measurement is generally used for non-magnetic coatings on ferrous substrates, such as paint on steel.
• N-type measurement is generally used for non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous metals, such as paint or anodizing on aluminum.
• For applications involving different substrates, a dual-function gauge can be more practical, especially when the operator needs to inspect mixed materials.
This becomes particularly relevant in industries such as:
🔹 Automotive refinishing and vehicle inspection
🔹 Powder coating
🔹 Metal fabrication
🔹 Industrial painting
🔹 Aluminum processing
🔹 Quality control and incoming inspection
There is another detail that is often overlooked:
The same coating can produce different measurement results if the substrate, surface condition, geometry, or calibration is different.
That is why professional thickness measurement is not simply about buying a gauge with a wide measuring range.
The more important questions are:
What is the substrate?
What is the coating?
What is the expected thickness range?
Is the surface flat, curved, rough, or irregular?
Will the instrument be used for spot inspection or production-line quality control?
Does the application require a specific probe or measurement method?
For distributors and industrial buyers, understanding these application differences can also make product selection much easier.
A good coating thickness gauge is not necessarily the one with the longest specification sheet.
It is the one that matches the measurement principle to the actual application.
And yes, sometimes the most expensive instrument in the catalog is not the answer. Humanity has already suffered enough from buying things based on the longest list of features.
